Beyond Codependency by Melody Beattie

Moving Beyond the "Fix-It" Phase: My Take on Beyond Codependency

If you’ve spent any time in the self-help world, you’ve likely heard of Melody Beattie. But while her first book taught us how to stop the bleeding, Beyond Codependency is where the real “life work” happens.

As a coach, I see so many people get stuck in the “awareness” phase. They know they have codependent traits, but they don’t know how to build a life that doesn’t revolve around someone else’s chaos. This book is the manual for that transition.

The Turning Point: Setting Your Own Goals

If I had to pick a standout section, it’s Chapter 10: “Setting Your Own Goals.” For many of us, the very idea of a personal goal feels selfish or even impossible. We’ve spent so long being “reactionary”—responding to other people’s moods, crises, or needs—that our own desires have become a blur.

Beattie argues that goal setting is the ultimate tool for detachment. When you have a vision for your own life, you simply don’t have the time or energy to micromanage everyone else’s. She teaches that:

  • Goals aren’t just “achievements”: They are a way of telling ourselves that we matter.
  • * The “How” doesn’t matter yet: Just the act of writing down what you want starts the process of reclaiming your power.
  • It’s okay to start small: Sometimes a goal is just “I will eat lunch away from my desk today.”

Why This Matters for You

Recovery isn’t just about “not being codependent.” It’s about becoming proactive. It’s about moving from a state of surviving your relationships to thriving in your own skin. Beattie’s writing reminds us that we are allowed to have a life that belongs solely to us.

“We don’t have to wait for someone else to change for our lives to get better.” — This is the heart of the book, and it’s the foundation of the work we do together.

Which of your goals have you been putting on the back burner while you take care of everyone else? Let’s talk about it.
